Dr Luke Evans, the Member of Parliament for Bosworth, followed up on his keynote speech at the A5 Conference by reiterating the need for improvements in a meeting with Roads Minister Katherine Fletcher.
On Friday 21st October Bosworth’s MP, Councillors and local stakeholders came together to discuss the strategic and economic importance of the A5 and the benefits that improvements to the historic road will bring to the region.
A few days later Dr Luke Evans sat down with the Roads Minister, Katherine Fletcher MP, and the most senior civil servant for roads from the Department for Transport to continue his campaign to bring awareness to the need for improvements along the A5.
The first of two big changes being called for by the local MP is the lowering of the road under the Watling Street bridge, named the ‘Britain’s Most Bashed bridge’ last year.
In addition to this Dr Luke is campaigning for the central section of the A5 – which supports almost 10% of jobs in the region and is travelled on by nearly 25,000 vehicles each day – to be dualled, as routine journeys can take up to 36% longer due to delays and bottlenecks.
Dr Luke Evans, MP for Bosworth, said: “I raised these issues so frequently with the preceding Roads Minister, Baroness Vere, that whenever she saw me she’d say ‘you’re here to talk about the A5, aren’t you?!’.
“I intend to gain a similar reputation with the new Roads Minister, which is why I was pleased to secure a meeting with Minister Fletcher so soon after her appointment to the Department.
“I’ll continue to reiterate to the Government the strategic and economic potential of our area and the benefits that these improvements would bring to people and businesses in Bosworth and across the Midlands.”
