Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council given £128,060 to help prevent homelessness among Ukrainians in the area who have come to the UK under the Home for Ukraine scheme.
There are around 110 households in Hinckley and Bosworth that have welcomed Ukrainians since the start of the Homes for Ukraine scheme last year following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24th 2022.
The £128,060 for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council is part of the Governments £150 million UK-wide funding as part of the wider £650 million support package for Ukrainians who have sought sanctuary in the UK.
The funding – a top-up to the existing Homelessness Prevention Grant – will ensure Ukrainian guests can be supported to move into their own homes and reduce the risk of homelessness. This can include support on accessing the private rental sector, access to employment opportunities and facilitating ongoing sponsorship into guests’ second year.
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council are to receive one of the largest local funding allocations, with neighbouring Local Authorities receiving smaller amounts due to a smaller proportion of Home for Ukraine arrivals in their area. For example, North West Leicestershire is to receive £92,397, Nuneaton has been allocated £118,554 and £38,950 for Oadby and Wigston.
Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, said “This additional funding is vital in ensuring our Ukrainian guests continue to receive the correct support while staying within our community.
“Putin’s illegal invasion has forced wives, mothers, families and children out of their homes and I know that our area can be proud of itself for the way we have welcomed them with open arms.
“No person should be forced to spend a night sleeping on the streets and I’ll be working alongside the local authorities to ensure everyone in our area has access to the support available.”
