Rishi Sunak is the only candidate to have secured more than 100 nominations from Conservative MPs, therefore he’s been chosen as the next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister.
As many of you will know I voted for Rishi during the summer when members of the Party were voting between Rishi and Liz Truss.
Before this, when MPs were choosing the final two candidates, I voted in support of Penny Mordaunt. Over the last few days, I chose to nominate Penny to become the next Party leader, believing she would bring stability and unity to our nation.
Rishi has commanded support of the majority of MPs and, as he was Chancellor for over two years, has proven experience of running the economy. I supported Rishi’s choices as Chancellor during the Covid pandemic and the level of support for all households, but particularly pensioners and the most vulnerable, announced in May to assist with cost of living pressures. Rishi has my full support moving forward.
This morning my office collated results of the leadership survey. More than 800 people completed the survey… a big thank you to everyone who took the time to respond! You may know that I also asked respondents to indicate if they would like a General Election, the results from this question are below...
‘Do you think there should be a General Election?’
