As you may have seen, a debate and vote on the Assisted Dying Bill took place in Parliament today.
I voted in favour of a change in the law.
330 MPs voted in favour, 275 voted against.
I have been contacted by over 450 people - on both sides of the argument - in the lead up to today’s vote. I'm grateful to everyone who took the time to get in touch with me.
Today, MPs voted on the principle of the Bill and over the coming months there will be further discussion about safeguards. On balance, I voted for the Bill to continue in its process through Parliament.
You can watch my speech here.
The Bill will now go to Committee for MPs to discuss further and propose any changes. There will then be another vote on the Bill in the coming months.
I know some will disagree with my vote, but I have always promised to be honest and open about the decisions I have taken as your MP and my reasons for doing so.
