Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, has welcomed news that five schools in Bosworth have secured funding from the £456 million Condition Improvement Fund.
Funding, which will go towards the restoration and refurbishment of school buildings, has been granted to five schools in Dr Evans’ constituency; Hastings High School, Battling Brook Primary School, Hinckley Parks Primary School, St Peter's Church of England Primary Academy and Richmond Primary School.
This new investment will upgrade and improve school and college facilities, providing pupils with safer and warmer classrooms and more energy efficient school buildings.
The five local schools were among 859 which were successful in their funding applications.
This comes as figures show that England has ranked first in the western world for primary reading proficiency in the highly anticipated Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) results.
Of the 43 countries that tested children of the same age (nine and ten year olds) England closely followed Singapore, Hong Kong and Russia which ranked first to third, respectively.
Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, said “I’m absolutely delighted that five schools in our area were successful for this important round of funding.
“We have seen an incremental improvement in the education of our children, and can say ours is a world-class education system – the recent PRILS reading results is evidence of this. While this is welcome news, we must build on it by continuing to invest in safe, warm and energy efficient classrooms so pupils have the facilities they need to study effectively and succeed.”
Baroness Diana Barran MBE, Minister for the School System, said “Our Condition Improvement Fund has already completed over ten thousand projects, making a difference to pupils and teachers across the country. These projects help to create safer learning environments that make a difference to the quality of education for pupils.
“It’s hugely important that every school has access to high-quality learning facilities and these funding allocations will make sure that responsible bodies can start to plan ahead and get projects started to replace roofs, boilers and windows – so pupils and teachers can learn and work in a comfortable space.”
