The Prime Minister has backed Dr Luke Evans MP’s campaign for a ‘Buy British’ button online as Morrisons become first supermarket to implement a ‘British’ section.
Speaking in Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 13th December Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, asked whether the Prime Minister supported his campaign for a ‘Buy British’ section on supermarkets’ online stores.
This follows news that Morrisons is the first supermarket to implement the ‘British’ section on their website following an open letter written by Dr Luke Evans MP and signed by over 120 cross-Party MPs.
The campaign has received widespread support with other 27,000 people signing a petition, started by the National Farmers Union in response to Dr Evans’ campaign, to supermarkets calling for a ‘Buy British’ section online.
Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, asked “Over 120 MPs from across the House signed my open letter to supermarkets asking to have a 'buy British' button online.
“I'm pleased to announce that last week Morrisons were the first supermarket to implement a 'buy British' tab that gives consumers the choice to have homegrown produce and also supports our farmers.
“So, will the Prime Minister join my cause to ask other supermarkets to have the courage to make the change and follow suit? “
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak responded “This Government will always back our farmers and I welcome the work of the Member for Bosworth and the National Farmers Union on this particular issue. We absolutely support the call for industry-led action on this topic.
“I welcome the news about the 'Buy British' button at Morrisons and I can tell [Dr Luke Evans] that we will continue to encourage all retailers to do all they can to showcase the incredible food produced right here in the United Kingdom.”
Speaking afterwards, Dr Luke Evans MP added “This all started when I asked farmers in Hinckley and Bosworth ‘what more can we do to support you?’ Their answer was simple; buy British produce.
“I thank the Prime Minister, and my colleagues across the House, for their support on my campaign which has received an overwhelmingly positive response from people across the country.
“By making this small change Morrisons have put our farmers and consumer choice first. They’ve raised the bar and I look forward to seeing other supermarkets follow their lead!”
