Over the last few days you may have seen comments from the Irish PM and Deputy PM regarding the Rwanda scheme....
Last week the Irish Deputy PM told The Daily Telegraph that the policy was already affecting Ireland because people were "fearful" of staying in Britain. He said asylum seekers were seeking "to get sanctuary here and within the European Union as opposed to the potential of being deported to Rwanda."
This then led to the Irish PM saying “We need to have a process in place where if somebody has status in another country, in this case the UK, and comes here seeking for asylum, then they should be returned to Britain.”
I agree with the Government, which has said "We won't accept any asylum returns from the EU via Ireland until the EU accepts that we can send them back to France. We are fully focused on operationalising our Rwanda scheme and will continue working with the French to stop the boats from crossing the Channel." Earlier this year I spoke in support of the Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill and made a similar point, which you can see above.
